If you think that a gym environment only attracts gym “lunks,” think again!
Mindful movement is trending up in the fitness world in the last decade. National health clubs are offering fully-appointed Pilates and Mind/Body Studios with highly-qualified instructors who possess National and International Certifications of high-esteem in the industry.
During the economic downturn in 2008, people still flocked to health clubs to participate in mindful movement programs such as private Pilates and yoga sessions and small group training on specialized equipment because they recognized the value of one-on-one and small group focus.
Consider Sport&Health Clubs in the DC/MD/VA areas. We encounter a wide variety of members from high school football players and middle-aged weekend warriors to octogenarians who have never been active before and are now looking to maintain balance, mobility and independence.
We offer specialty programming for each part of the population – consider it mini-boutiques within the club setting – to create a sense of community. Furthermore, we’ve found that trying something new and changing it up from traditional weight lifting or group fitness feels less intimidating and more accessible.
An example of current mind body classes and programs include Restorative & Yin Yoga, Bodhi Suspension, Pilates, CoreAlign and MOTR which offer variety and an opportunity to focus on full body integration. Mindful movement is accessible to our members because we have an exchange with our multiple mini-boutiques within our clubs. Our highly qualified experts partner with each other to help them feel successful and to achieve their goals.
We attribute our success to having fully-appointed Mind&Body Studios. We focus on private, one-to-one training, and limit small group specialty training to six participants that had previously taken private sessions. This is different from many gyms that provide mostly group session offerings with larger participation and less personal focus.
Don’t be afraid to try or incorporate mindful movement in a gym setting. It’s a great way to get your feet wet in a supportive and non-intimidating environment, try something new and broaden your horizons of what a gym setting is!
